Placer County Animal Shelter Facility

The team of Unger Construction Co / Dreyfuss and Blackford Architects in association with Animal Arts was selected by Placer County as the Design-Build team for the new Animal Shelter Facility to be located in Auburn. The design will provide a highly compact layout for quick staff response to all areas of the facility and provides a shelter with caring and compassionate spaces – for the animals, the working staff and visiting, adopting families. With our supporting team of architects, engineers and subcontractors, we bring outstanding skill and experience to assure the success of the Placer County Animal Shelter.

Project Update

The Placer County Animal Services Center project is moving along right on schedule. The team made great progress through the fall season, with the foundations and building slabs complete, structural steel erected, roof trusses, beams & sheathing all in place, exterior shell framing underway, and the site improvements all coming together in time for the wet winter that we are hoping for this year in California.

Superintendent Matt Marcotte, Carpenter Foreman Steve Wrangham, Labor Foreman Matt Felkins and Cement Mason Forman Anthony Castner are heading up the field crews, as PM Dave Jensen, PE’s Tim Bunyan and Mike Kumar, and PA Gale Grigsby are all keeping on top of the administrative aspect of this busy design-build project.

Unger and design-build partner Dreyfuss & Blackford are working closely with the County to finalize all of the many product and equipment decisions that are making this facility come together as the most carefully planned and well-executed project possible. Seeing the building take shape is generating a lot of interest in the project among the various County groups, so jobsite tours are already getting started.

With the project having been designed 3-D in Revit, we’re able to walk staff through the model to give them a realistic view of what each of the spaces will look like, as well as animate things such as sun studies to demonstrate how shading and lighting in various areas will change throughout the day in each season. It’s a great tool, helping people to visualize the design and make informed decisions when they can add the most value – before the work is put in place.
